Flanged pipe is common in rigid piping systems. They work well above ground in water filtration plants, sewage and wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and industrial plants, per AWWA C115/21.15. Flanged joints are not recommended for underground use because their rigidity can’t absorb uneven settling or other stresses, which can put excessive strain on the flanges or pipe.
