Georgetown Water Supply
Enhancement Project
Georgetown, Guyana
The Project
The Georgetown Water Enhancement Project represents a major investment in strengthening water infrastructure in Georgetown, Guyana. Led by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), the GY$800 million initiative focused on replacing aging water mains that had been in service for more than 120 years.
Under increasing pressure from heavy-duty truck traffic over the past two years, the old cast iron system had become prone to frequent breaks and service interruptions. To address this, approximately 270 kilometers of deteriorated mains were replaced with new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe—providing greater flexibility, durability, and long-term reliability.
AVEM Water served as the distributor for the HDPE pipe used in this upgrade, supporting GWI in modernizing a critical portion of Georgetown’s water network. The result is a more resilient system designed to reduce disruptions, minimize water loss, and support the city’s continued growth.
Supply Challenge
The primary supply challenge on the Georgetown Water Enhancement Project was guiding Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) through a specification shift from traditional ductile iron pipe to HDPE pipe and fittings. That transition required technical alignment, engineering justification, and confidence in long-term performance standards.
Logistically, the project was complex. Material ranged from 36-inch diameter mains down to 8-inch lines, including a full assortment of corresponding fittings.
AVEM Solution
As the distributor, AVEM Water coordinated international shipments, sequenced deliveries, and determined what needed to arrive first—and what could follow later—with disciplined planning. The objective was to keep installation crews productive without overwhelming Guyana Water Incorporated’s storage capacity or tying up capital in excess inventory.
In parallel, we supported on-the-ground execution. This included training both the subcontractor and GWI teams on HDPE butt fusion procedures, proper handling practices, and inspection protocols to ensure joint integrity and compliance with project specifications.
Throughout the process, cost control remained a priority. Shipments were structured and phased to support cash flow management, helping GWI execute a major infrastructure upgrade while maintaining financial discipline.
